On Friday 7th & Saturday 8th February, Sneinton Market Plaza will be at the heart of the Light Night celebrations with street food from Nottingham Street Food Club, live music, the City Arts parade, DJs and art installations.
Life NewsThere will be open studios, illuminated window displays, UV denim painting, shadow puppet shows, art exhibitions and a cocktail lab. Sneinton Market Square will become a UV skate park and later on there's Late Night Light Night an after party over the road at Surface Gallery.
Nottingham Street Food Club will be bringing tasty treats from Dosa Love, Homeboys, Squeaky Beaver and Rocket Dogs. Liquid refreshment will be provided by the folks from Redsmith and Thirsty Farmer, and Neon Raptor on Avenue A will be open as usual for all your beer requirements.
Creative Quarter has commissioned a projection by Primary-based artist Pete Ellis, and Nottingham eco-artist Sarah Turner to run a community workshop ahead of Light Night to create artworks around the theme of ‘The Deep Sea’ and environmental sustainability that will be exhibited in windows at the market.
Nottingham Trent University Theatre Design students, in collaboration with Creative Quarter, will also do a unit takeover showing illuminated costumes made from upcycled waste materials.
By Our Hands We Make Our Way turning their workshop on Freckingham Street into a submersible, diving deep into the ocean. They'll have projections on the Friday night from dusk until 10pm, and a workshop/making session on Saturday from 5pm - 8pm.
INSTAR will be collaborating closely with young people and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s youth team to turn Sneinton Market Square into a temporary UV skate park with UV visual street artworks all inspired by the natural world. Skate Nottingham are working with Backlit Gallery to inspire the skate park designs.
At One BC, the fashion label will be hosting ReJEANeration, and are asking locals to donate their much loved and worn old denim, from which a new garment will be born. There will be a live performance from 6pm - 9pm on Friday night, and a ReJEANeration worshop from 12pm - 4pm on Saturday.
MinorOak Coworking will invite you to explore physical and virtual cityscapes through the medium of light with MJ The Art Traveller. There will also be vegan-friendly cocktails and mocktails by Cocktail Lab.
English Combat in Dunkirk is a medieval and self defence group and usually fight with swords. They have been performing at Light Night for several years and on Friday night they will join us in Sneinton Market, where they will swap their swords for lightsabers.
On Friday evening, there will be An Alternative Fashion Show presented by tenants LSjatDS and Soul and Flare, under the theme of environmental sustainability, with special creative dancers & DJ BSXY. Expect lights, vogueing, creative dancing, good beats & lots of fun. There will be two show times on the Friday evening: 6.30pm and 7.30pm, starting outside Unit 40 on Avenue C, opposite Fox & Grapes.
City Arts will be running two parades over the weekend. On Friday evening, they present a carnival parade featuring award-winning local troupes. They include Inspire Urself, Can Samba, Zodiac All Stars and the Brazillian Cultural Centre, all specially illuminated for Light Night. Supported by the team from EMCCAN and Nottingham Carnival, the parade will start at Sneinton Market from 7pm.
On Saturday evening, a lantern parade will be the main focus, starting off from the Avenues at 7.30pm. Community groups from across Nottingham embark on a stunning illuminated procession. Featuring giant lantern artworks by artists Jessica Kemp and Bryony McCombie-Smith, plus the Can Samba drummers. The parade will also feature lanterns made by Nottingham WI, Meander Theatre, William Booth Primary, Greenway Community Centre, the 92nd Nottingham Scout Group and people who attended family-friendly lantern workshops at City Arts.
The festival will continue later into Friday night when Creative Quarter and Surface Gallery host Late Night Light Night featuring two up-and-coming Nottingham bands Megatrain and Cinema Gold, and a DJ set from Soul Buggin' from 8pm until midnight.
