Nottingham City Centre will be a celebration of colour on Saturday 28th July as Nottinghamshire Pride 2018 bursts back for it’s biggest year yet. Taking place in Hockley the annual LGBTQ+ celebration is jam-packed full of events and activities for people of all ages to enjoy.
Life NewsThe growing annual equality Pride march begins at 11.30am on Castle Gate in the city centre and will see thousands of people marching along Wheeler Gate, Old Market Square, Clumber Street and Parliament Street arriving at Broad Street for the festivities. The march celebrates diversity and equality in support of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s totally free to take part in and everybody is welcome to participate by marching, spectating or simply enjoying the fun!
The March will end in the heart of Hockley where our main stage will host some amazing live music and performers through the afternoon into the evening. This year there is a wide variety of music artists, comedy and theatre including two singers who hold Top 5 UK hits and an X-Factor and The Voice contestant. There will also be DJ’s playing music to the crowds on Broad Street and Heathcote Street as many bars and retailers transform their premises to show support for diversity and equality in the Midlands best city which we are all so proud of.
This is a big year for the event as for the first time funding has been provided by the UK Arts Council enhancing the quality of artists provided in the entertainment programme.
In addition to this Nottingham Bid have listed the event within their top 25 events to draw crowds into the city this year. They are supporting the event and have provided funding under their “It’s In Nottingham” brand.
Capital One have already dressed the front of their building as they celebrate diversity and inclusiveness in the workplace with their Pride month for employees across both their London and Nottingham offices. In light of this they have also reached out with support for the event.
There will be 48 stalls on Broad Street and Heathcoat Street representing a wide range of interests and providing information on a range of subjects.
Nottinghamshire Pride Chair, Leigh Ellis is proud to see the annual festival continue to grow and draw larger crowds every year as our community continues to campaign for equality.
“Last year we had over seven thousand people attend the event and it was great to see so many diverse people and families supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Every year we put more effort into making Pride even more special, aiming to provide an inclusive and a community focussed free event for all to enjoy, but this can only happen through the funding and donations we receive. A lot of hard work goes into the planning and organisation of the event through the course of the year and we’d like to offer thanks to people, businesses and organisations who work with us to make the event happen. Lastly, we’d also like to give a big shout to all of our volunteers who give up their spare time to help make the event a success.”
Nottinghamshire Pride Chair, Leigh Ellis“Nottinghamshire Pride is something that we have to fund ourselves as a charity every year. To help ensure that the festival’s future is secure for future generations there will be donation points in Hockley, all proceeds raised from these will go towards the festival budget next year. So if you can support the organisers with a small donation it would be greatly appreciated. Come and support Pride and enjoy this vibrant and inclusive event in the heart of the city. Everyone always comments about how much fun the event is and how it gets better each year. Every year we joke nobody may turn up but the crowd keeps getting bigger. It’s a great day out, something that the whole family can enjoy, with a really friendly, colourful and accepting atmosphere. We would thoroughly recommend it for anyone who supports diversity and wants to celebrate it in our city.”
Thanks as always goes to Nottingham City Council for allowing the event to take place in an area so central and accessible to our community. Keep your eyes peeled for the celebration Pride banner across the Council House in the Old Market Square.
