This March sees the return of Surface Gallery's annual collaboration with Nottingham Trent University with the eighth NTU Festival: Let There Be Light. Following the success of last year's NTU Festival: The Part Versus the Whole, this year's selected Fine Art students will be using a critical and reflective approach to curate group exhibitions in response to the festival's title by exploring concepts such as enlightenment, illumination, exposure, discovery, and understanding.
Life NewsThe NTU Festival offers selected Fine Art students the opportunity to curate a group exhibition that establishes their practice outside of the university. Surface Gallery provides a supportive and professional environment for the students to plan and show their work. Two exhibitions will run concurrently in each week of the festival.
Week One
Landing in the Pantheon
Molly Bouch / Jasmine Brown / Pádraig Condron / Charlie Dean / Beth Ellen / Harry Freestone / Elina Hadjinicola
Exhibition: 20th – 23rd March, 6-8pm
The light in the sky is growing stronger.
Seven artists gather in anticipation.
It's on a collision course.
Estimated date of arrival, 19/03.
Something is landing in the Pantheon.
The artists begin to prepare their lessons.
When the education of this subject is left in their hands, will it learn all it needs to navigate this new and unfamiliar world?
On the Sixth Day Isobel Cawley / Jana Drava / Chelcie Gascoigne / George Levens / Imogen Worthington Exhibition: 20th – 23rd March, Project Space Opening Night: Tuesday 19th March, 6-8pm
On the Sixth Day is an exhibition that will examine the creation of gender through visual media, installation and sound. Drawing from personal experiences and social expectations, the exhibition will shed light on the complexities of existing within the gender binary, and draw parallels between creation myths and the construction of identity. A fantastical and innovative approach to the subject, the show will be an exploration of character, attitudes, aesthetics and gender in relation to human history, myth and religion; a reflection on the way identity traits intersect and influence our navigation of the world, with particular focus on gender, sexuality and faith.
Week Two
There’s No Place Like Home Joshua Brewin / Emily Edmond / Ben Rostance Exhibition: 27th – 30th March, Main Gallery Opening Night: Tuesday 26th March, 6-8pm
There’s No Place Like Home looks into the experience of being exposed to developmental trauma and how it can be a journey of discovery and enlightenment. Exploring trauma, finding positive coping mechanisms and key points of enlightenment that can come from such a dark place through video, sound works and installation.
Morii Jessica Pye / Susannah Wheatcroft Exhibition: 27th – 30th March, Project Space Opening Night: Tuesday 26th March, 6-8pm
Morii -- the desire to capture a fleeting moment. This collaborative exhibition sees artists Susannah Wheatcroft and Jessica Pye use sculpture and installation to portray their technicolour view of the world, focusing on enchanted moments that can be found within day-to-day instants in life. Juxtaposing fluorescent shards with melting puddles whilst playing with synthetic material and natural lighting, this collaboration results in a deconstructed kaleidoscope that the audience is invited to explore.
Artist Talks: Saturday 30th March, 2pm
Free Entry: Everyone Welcome
Opening Hours: Opening Nights: Tuesday 19th and Tuesday 26th March, 6-8pm Tuesday to Friday: 12:00-18:00 Saturday: 11:00-17:00
