Backlit is incredibly proud to announce a new partnership with Tate as we become a new Tate Exchange associate.
The CQ NewsTate Exchange is an ambitious ‘open experiment’ which allows other organisations and members of the public to participate in Tate’s creative process, running events and projects on site and using art as a way of addressing wider issues in the world around us.
As part of this programme, Backlit will be taking a newly developed installation, D.I.Y. Machine, that explores themes of production, engagement and interaction. D.I.Y. Machine takes the form of a roulette wheel that invites participants to randomly choose their own experience. The wheel is linked to a five creative workshop stations, led by a number of Nottingham-based and Backlit studio artists, who will be working with participants in the creation of photography, ceramic, performance, sculpture and more.
Artist workshops and experiences include:
Chloe Langlois
Outsider (Pauline Woolley, Mel Kirkham, Val Turton and Julie Moosburg)
Through shared interests with time, change and community, Outsider collective will
be working with people in Nottingham and Southwark, London, to create photo-
sensitive image-recording devices that will trace the path of the sun. This seeks to
open discussion around the social similarities created from living 'under one sky';
regardless of location.
Booth of Truth (Dominique Golden and Nicholas Clifford)
This travelling vinyl recording installation, invites participants to tell their inner most
secrets in a language coded through abstract text and image prompts provided by
the artists. The recording will be made direct to vinyl, capturing the most authentic
account of reactions to prompts.
D.I.Y. Machine aims to reconstruct the ways we engage, interact and communicate about art. By shifting the power away from the creators and institution, the participants are at will of the roulette wheel to decide their experience.
Backlit has already taken a condensed version of D.I.Y. Machine to the first Uniqlo Tate Late event of 2018 on the 26th of January, 6-10pm, at Tate Modern. The full work will then be installed during a Tate Exchange event from 20th – 22nd February 2018, 12pm – 6pm, in the Blavatnik Building.
