In anticipation of this Friday's Nottingham Light Night here is a look back of some of the more interesting art installations that Lamar Francois has been able to take a look at. Within the previous eight years, he’s been able to get involved with the event.
The CQ NewsFor me, Light Night has been one of the public events in which I first really got to appreciate the magic of the night - and how light can be used to tell a story and communicate an ambience. The night time is an unusual sight for many people, and it's a good event from the point of view of encouraging members of the public to be able to discover something new . I first took a look at Light Night back in 2010 as hobbyist developing my craft , an aside to my Maths and Physics degree at the University of Nottingham.
It has been one of those key events which has inspired my professional practice , working with creative people and brands helping them showcase the magic of their art. These include the Nottingham City of Literature , Wolfgang Buttress and the Architects of Air - and I'm particularly interested in seeing what I can do with architects and public arts installers in the future.
2017 : Colourful umbrellas of the "Light Rain" installation within the bandstand of Nottingham Castle.
2016 : Again within Nottingham Castle , the lines of the Albert Ball memorial statue are contrasted against the night sky and surrounding foliage.
2015 : A workshop installation outside by Dezigne along Goose Gate demonstrating some quirky interior lighting techniques.
2014 : Otherworldly details of the Ceramica installation by Elaine Lim-Newton
2013 : An installation in Old Market Square from a team at the University of Nottingham's School of Built Environment , in a very similar spirit to the Bird's Nest of Beijing.
2012: Nottingham Castle with gelled floodlights adding plenty of colour and creating a magical scene , along with snowfall this evening.
2011 : Blocks of polystyrene were lit up outside St Mary's Church in the Lace Market for this particular year - liking the angular nature of this with the futuristic vibe going on.
2010 : "Peaceful" , dreamy pyramids installed alongside Smithy Row providing a magical atmosphere for the evening's events.
