As part of a major revamp to it's marketing strategy Buxton International Festival is looking for Graphic Designer and/or Creative Artworker to design the 2020 festival brochure and supporting artwork.
Work OpportunitiesBuxton International Festival is one of the UK’s leading arts events taking place in July each year. Presented annually since 1979, BIF is a cultural celebration of the very best opera, music, and literature taking place in the hills of the beautiful Peak District.
BIF produces its own operas alongside a series of concerts by leading British and international musicians, plus a literary series featuring leading writers and thinkers. All this fits into a packed summer programme of in excess of 120 events over a 17-day period to an audience of over 10,000.
With a new marketing team, Buxton International Festival’s brand and communications has had a much-needed re-vamp with a fresh, vibrant, and image-led design to attract new audiences.
Buxton International Festival is asking for design and artwork proposals for its:
Festival Brochure
The Festival brochure lists all of the events during the festival. It is the number one selling tool and needs to inspire audiences to book for as many events as possible. They aspire to be contemporary, colourful, image-led and well-designed so that key messages/themes cut through when flicking from page to page. The 2020 programme will be smaller so we expect this brochure to have less pages than 2019 which was 80pp.
Opera Artwork
In 2020 BIF will produce 4 operas and 1 musical, each having their own artworks. For the 2020 programme they are open to all styles. They do like colour, people, emotion, and a sense of place. The five opera images need to have a visual connection/’togetherness’ so they are seen as a set/series, though this does not have to be formulaic - it could be layout, colour, themes etc.
You can see our full opera programme here. However, for your proposal please use the following two operas:
La donna del lago by Gioachino Rossini
Libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola (based on The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott). A Buxton International Festival Production.
La donna del lago is one of the most lyrical of Gioachino Rossini’s operas, with expansive ensembles and shimmering orchestration. It is based on Walter Scott’s 1810 poem The Lady of the Lake and features a libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola. Although its premiere in Naples in 1819 was a success it was rarely staged throughout much of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Synopsis: La donna del lago opens in the atmospheric surroundings of the Scottish Highlands, as Elena – the titular Lady of the Lake – rows across Loch Katrine, singing of her love for romantic heroMalcolm. Elena’s exquisite arias are contrasted with moments of high drama, from the stormyconfrontation between Rodrigo and the King to the orchestral frenzy unleashed at the sighting of a meteor. Acis and Galatea by George Frideric Handel
English text by John Gay. A co-production with the Early Opera Company.
The opera, with a libretto by John Gay, with Alexander Pope and John Hughes, is based on Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book XIII). Acis and Galatea was the opera of Handel's most performed during his lifetime. It tells of the love between Acis, an Arcadian shepherd, and Galatea, a nymph, and the mortal jealousy of Polyphemus, a giant.
Synopsis: Acis is in love with Galatea. The monster, Polyphemus, also loves her. In a jealous rage, and spurned by Galatea, Polyphemus hurls a boulder at Acis and mortally wounds him. Galatea uses her magic powers to change her dead lover into a stream that will flow eternally. Full synopsis here: https://handelhendrix.org/lear...
