Wander down to Goosegate in Hockley and you can’t miss the stylish little shop that is Montana. Opened in 2008, they are not only at the forefront of the graffiti scene in Nottingham, but are also the only official outlet in the UK for Montana Colors, the first ever spray paints designed specifically for artists. This wonderful little gem of a shop doesn’t only sell paints and markers, but is also full of original and exciting clothing and accessories. You can even pick up a really cool trainercleaning kit all the way from LA.
Work ShowcaseIf you have a creative streak or you know someone who does, or if you like original and stylish streetwear, this is the place to go. The owners of the shop, Steve and Sylvia, travel the world looking for those extra special items to fill the shelves. Indeed, they say they would rather have an empty shop than stock products they don’t believe in. And if you want a truly original gift, then look no further. From the aforementioned cleaning kits for the sneaker freak in your life, to a mini New York subway train ready to be customised, Montana carries some great ideas that are guaranteed to bring a smile.
Montana are the foremost spraypaint brand from Barcelona, made for graffiti. I went there in 1995 and have always had a good relationship with them. In 2008 we reached a mutual agreement to open the store. It’s 100% independent but we fly the flag for them. I wanted to do something I was passionate about and support the scene, and here we are making a success of it.
Graffiti and spray paint are still the most important things, but I’ve always liked quality clothing and things that aren’t mass produced. We’ve just got these trainer cleaning kits from LA. We don’t sell trainers but they are the best and a cool product. The store is about a lifestyle. So the clothing fits and the stuff to clean your trainers fits, the art materials fit, everything is connected.
Its broad and getting broader. It’s open for everyone who is creative or wants to be creative, veterans and beginners. And we cater for those who like something a little different. People can come in for pens and paint, a t-shirt or a nice pair of socks.
We’ll have more clothing. We are very proactive in getting the latest products on the market, but we’re pretty much like that all year round. We are always searching for something new. That’s why I travel a lot. We won’t fill the shop with things we don’t believe in.
Independent shops can offer something different and give you more choice. We are not just controlled by profits. Nothing here is mass produced; it’s carefully selected and artist driven. At Montana you can find something that is unique and not available on the high street.
Modern urban living in and amongst refurbished lace factories and warehouses. On-trend independent retailers and many bars, restaurants, cafés, galleries, arts cinema and theatres. A buzz in the daytime and a rhythm at night.
