Sneinton Market solar panels are contributing green energy back into the grid in a bid to help Nottingham become the UK's first carbon neutral city.
Work KnowledgeEarly last year, the city council made national news headlines it declared its intentions to make Nottingham the country’s first carbon neutral city. CN2028 is a Nottingham City Council plan that covers everything from electric taxis, to LED lighting, and installing solar panels. When interviewed by The Independent in January last year, councillor Sally Longford, Portfolio holder for Energy, Environment and Democratic Services said: “If it stands still, we’re going to put a solar panel on it… And, if it moves, we’re going to do everything we can to make sure it moves on clean energy.”
There’s certainly been an uptake in the use of solar panels around the city to offset the reliance on fossil fuels, and there are two such buildings in the Sneinton Market area of the Creative Quarter that are involved. In Sneinton Market Avenues, where the Creative Quarter Company office and a number of small independent creative businesses are based, a number of solar panel systems have been installed on the roof of the units. While people enjoy the sunshine, outdoor markets and some tasty street food at ground level, clean green energy is being generated just above their heads. Similarly, the roof of nearby Victoria Leisure Centre is covered in solar panels: 172 to be exact, which has saved 15 tonnes in carbon and nearly £5000 in electricity bills to date.
