I am a mid-career fine artist (painter, printmaker and mixed media artist) of thirty eight years’ experience. I graduated with an M.A. Fine Art in 1996 and have had numerous local (Nottingham), national and international solo and group exhibitions.
Landscape has been my main source of inspiration since I graduated from Leicester Polytechnic (now De Montfort University), in 1982.
Some of my work is representational, other semi-abstract or abstract - oil, acrylic and mixed media (paper pulp and other materials) on canvas and panel, with watercolour, oil pastel, pencil, charcoal and mono prints on paper.
My experience of world travel (including time spent living and travelling in Southern Africa - Zambia and surrounding countries) has been a strong source of inspiration, with my artwork being a metaphor for landscape; the transition in nature, its flora and fauna and my ‘shorthand’/abbreviated markmaking can be ‘transcribed’ as emotional responses to the changes in my own life: an ‘autobiography’.
During my M.A. Fine Art course, 1995-6, at Bretton Hall, techniques explored of gestural/expressive mono printing transferred over into my very large oil paintings, when exciting experimental abstracts became my new way of working.
Following on from this, sculptural shallow-relief landscape-inspired paper pulp paintings, echoing the North Yorkshire Moors, cliff tops and rock formations, became a logical development.
I have now reached a further stage in my artistic practice - portraiture - whereby, on request, I have been capturing the colourful nuances of African faces. It will, indeed, be interesting to see where this new development takes me.
