From the early cycle of Poverty Row features, the cranked-out Saturday morning serials and the bombastic yet penny pinched monster movies of the 1950s, the low budget arena has often been ridiculed and denigrated with much of its output being consigned to the bargain bins of Hollywood history. A deeper look at this world though reveals a richer, far more rewarding canon of work replete with its mix of influential, subversive and cinema defining moments. Using plenty of clips and discussion, this course will examine cult classics like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Carnival of Souls, the later work of horror stars like Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, legends like Ed D Wood Jr and Roger Corman and game changing box office hits like Night of the Living Dead, The Blair Witch Project, and Monsters.
