This is our third event, and we are delighted to have John Baine aka Attila the Stockbroker joining us to talk about his involvement with RAR and doing a performance of his poems and songs old and new...
"Feb 2nd, 1978. Two and a half years before I did my first gig as Attila the Stockbroker, what I believe was my very first ever solo gig, doing very early poems and songs on the mandolin. It was a Rock Against Racism gig at Canterbury College of Art and I organised it as one of many gigs Kent Area Rock Against Racism put on at the time - I was the organiser while a student at Kent University. The Infested and the Provokers were local school bands - Chris Brownett, one of the Provokers, found the poster and says I also stood in on bass for them at the gig cos their bass player was ill. I am almost certain that one of the punk bands round there featured Damien Harris, who went on to be Midfield General of Skint Records fame, sponsors of the Seagulls at Withdean - he was a huge help to us when we were planning 'Tom Hark (We Want Falmer)' the single we released as Seagulls Ska on Skint in January 2005 as part of our battle for our new stadium, which got to 17 in the charts, a story for another time. Back then, after finishing university, I helped with many other RAR gigs in the UK and then moved to Brussels where I was involved with Rock against Racism there, including organising the 'Live at the Counter Eurovision' gig featuring Misty in Roots which Peel said was his favourite album of all time'.
We will also have live music, DJ's and local poets joining us on the night.
SATURDAY 9TH MARCH 6PM - 12AM.
