This course will explore the art of memoir writing, the kind that travels best from your pen to readers everywhere, irrespective of background. This literary genre often presents a fresh set of challenges very different from fiction or reportage, and this course will explore them all. You will delve into the style and substance most suitable for your own writing and will work on establishing authentic, relatable voices, and ethical, yet exciting and imaginative approaches to memoir writing. We will discuss, dissect, write, laugh, cry, eat biscuits, and come away well equipped to start (or finish) that amazing memoir!
Participants will explore memoir writing in both theory and practice and receive coach and peer feedback for the work you do. There will also be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and engage in informal discussion with your peers.
Shreya is currently writing a libretto for the Welsh National Opera, a book of short stories for HarperCollins, as well as a travelogue, also for HarperCollins. Former television producer and journalist Shreya Sen-Handley is also kept busy by her children, human and canine, her creative writing workshops for a range of organisations including the Universities of Nottingham and Cambridge, her regular prattle on BBC and Notts TV, her occasional forays into illustrating, her plentiful articles for the international media including the National Geographic and The Guardian, and the fallout from her award-winning memoir, “Memoirs of My Body”, published by HarperCollins in 2017.
